Lobelia School of Luthiery will offer a comprehensive, intimate instruction providing students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the skilled trade of guitar building.
Students will learn the theory, origin, science and time-proven methods of acoustic guitar construction. This education will create a foundation for all forms of luthiery and can be a stepping stone for branching out to other stringed instrument construction.
This intensive 10-week (450 hour) course will be immersive and hands-on and will include instruction on tool safety (both hand tools and power tools), all facets of building an acoustic guitar from start to finish, including tone wood selection and procurement, milling, routing, jig construction, sanding, finishing and guitar set up. Classes will be Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and Saturdays, as needed.
Each student will take home 2 guitars.

Instructor and founder, Luke Bair, has been building acoustic stringed instruments since 1995. After graduating from Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery, in Phoenix, AZ, Luke worked in instrument repair and was then the first employee at Huss and Dalton Guitar Company in Staunton, VA. Luke designed some of Huss and Dalton’s custom inlay designs, still used today. He co-owned Mills-Lucas Guitar Company, in Greenville, WV and is one of the co-founders of Appalachian Tonewood in Lewisburg, WV, which sources high-end, domestic tonewoods for stringed instruments being made around the country by prominent manufacturers including Gibson Guitars in Bozeman, MT. Luke also established JL Bair Guitars in 2022 selling custom guitars to musicians and collectors.
Luke has a passion and drive for creating high end, acoustic stringed instruments and is a gifted teacher. Lobelia School of Lutherie is dream 20 years in the making.

Guest lecturers will include several experts in the field of luthiery, and will cover topics such as bowed instrument building and theory, guitar repair and tone wood selection and cutting.

Tuition: $8,500
Materials: $1,000 per instrument (includes case)
Hand Tool Kit: $$350-400, list will be provided. Students will keep these tools.
